PEARLS in the Rough pt.I

There’s a whole lot to cover in regards of this collaborative/ creative think-space/thinking on toes/ heart-warming heck of a weekend. But first, for those who could not make it (darn you Coachella and Manny!) let me take you inside the gallery portion of our art show.

The children of Project PEARLS live through the saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Despite their environment, they manage to continue to smile, play and dream. Although we seek to help them, they bless us with humility and fulfilling smiles. These pieces are dedicated to them, the children with the power to build a kingdom from scraps. They are our precious— yet diligent— PEARLS in the Rough.

P.s. As for the thank you’s and the event itself, more on that later. To keep it short…I am indescribably happy and grateful for all of you who made it through in this hectic weekend and I am in debt to those who were involved from the beginning to end.

The Final Stretch for PEARLS in the Rough

It’s been a minute since I updated the blog. I know, I know. I’m sorry.
Let me start off by saying we tired!

But grateful that this is the reason. Balancing day jobs with Empire isn’t the easiest and requires lots of coffee and ice cream breaks. However, that’s what makes building this brand much more fulfilling. I paint and sew as the homies package and organize.

For example, the His&Hers packaging is a collaborative effort between Christopher and one of my roommates, Stephanie. They just asked me to design the cardstock and that was it! ( My Pinterest-obsessed mother would be proud. ) We’re almost done with these bad boys and I’m more excited than ever after seeing what they conjured up for them.

We have reached our final week! Our anticipation is growing as the pop-up  shop and art show is coming together. And we can’t wait to share it all with you this Saturday!

Our art show, PEARLS in the Rough, is this Saturday, 7PM at the Haus of Godspeed in Oakland.

THE URBAN YOUNG PROFESSIONAL :: DANCE (TRAILER)

Today is a big day!
Pre-sales for “The Roots”Crewneck begin now!
Pre-sales will run from March 10-27 || Holler at us before prices go up!
http://empireintheair.bigcartel.com/
They will be available for pick-up at our next event, PEARLS

Another announcement is, drum roll please, we are launching a mini dance series today.

What I love about the journey of this brand is how it started as a solo movement and is becoming more and more of a collaborative force. We have Christopher behind the camera, dancers from two different dance groups (Gabe and Jolo from the Company and Aiko and David from Akbayan of SJSU’s APM), and music produced by our very own friend, Steven Cheung.

Thank you guys for making this series happen! As the wise man named Ne-Yo once said, a movement by myself but I’m a force when we’re together.

And to all the supporters, as I mentioned in the last post, The Roots is a thank you to you for helping us grow— from our first customers in 2010 to the new love in our 2013 comeback. The Roots is dedicated to you.

If you look closely to the sweater’s pattern, you will find design elements from past products. The magenta squares are imprinted with the "Cloud" logo, whereas the lift from our original shirt is in the triangles. Also, the greens and blues are directly sampled from the original shirt too. The vibrant colors, tribal-like layout and the graffiti-esque typography is a combination of the “trends” as a 90’s kid that revived when we became college kids.

We may be pushing boundaries this time around but we are commemorating the foundations, the Roots, that got us here in the first place. This design is a thank you to our supporters who helped us grow— from our first customers in 2010 to the new love in our 2013 comeback. The Roots is dedicated to you.

The Roots x the Urbanettes

My best friend, Celestine Urbano, and her sister, Chelsea Urbano, have always been known for their stylish keen eye. Put these two creative minds together and you get the oh-so-wonderful: Urbanettes, fashion bloggers.

Last weekend, I lent the Urbanettes pieces from the Urban Young Professional to style it up their own way. They then made several outfits, and with Christopher, put together an additional lookbook.

Here are a handful of photos (from the hundreds) of different ways to style the Roots crewneck sweater.
